Get Your Blog To The Top Of The Search Engines

It's a lot of fun to blog, but it can get old fast if no one is visiting! Getting your blog to the top of the search engines for your main key phrases should be your goal to make this traffic happen. Keep in mind that it will take time, but it's very possible.

You're going to need to learn about Search Engine Optimization to make this a reality. The very basics of this is knowing which keywords to focus on. These are what people are searching for in the search engines, and how they might find your blog. Some of these keywords get a lot more searches than others get, so it's in your best interest to eventually choose the ones that do get searched for often. Keep in mind that these are often more competitive than ones that are searched for less -- but you might get lucky.

You need to focus your efforts on these keywords for now. Choose a big one that will take longer to reach, as well as three to four additional terms you're going to try and rank for. These should all be similar! Then, you're going to include these keywords in each blog post you make in various combinations. Always focus your posts on one term, and include the others only if they make sense. As you focus on these similar keywords the search engines will start to rank you more highly because your blog is tightly focused and relevant to what you're targeting.

It's not always that easy, however. A lot of ranking decisions are based on how many backlinks you have coming into your website. You need to do what you can to get relevant links that point to your homepage and your individual posts. You can get these links by writing articles to submit to directories, writing guest blog posts on other high traffic blogs, using social networking sites, using social bookmarking sites, and buying links (be very careful with this tactic.)

One of the best ways to get your blog to the top of the search engines is to show consistent, relevant postings over time. Google seems to favor domains that have had some time to age and that are going to be a good bet for their visitors. Remember --- Google's (and other engine's) goal is to provide the best experience possible for the people who search with them. If your blog is going to be a good match for your search terms it will be easier for you to rank and stay there.

Finally, you need to make sure that you're always posting amazing content. The better your content and the more interesting your blog, the more people will link to it. There is nothing better than getting free links just because people liked what you have to say! Keep your mind on the SEO side of things, but also remember that you are ultimately catering to the needs of the people in your niche. If they like you, the search engines will like you.

Excellent breakdown of blogging Linda.
Anil Atluri Comment by Anil Atluri on May 29, 2009 at 7:07am
@Linda: Nice tips Linda. But I have a question though regarding your timing of the blog posts. Should it be daily or weekly? When or where would a serious professional or careerist find time to post? I see many that do begin blogging about their favorite hobbies or careers slowly stop in updating their blogs.. :(
Linda White Comment by Linda White on May 29, 2009 at 7:01am
Ok the first step in blogging for profit is to chose your niche. A niche is the subject or the thing that you want to write about or promote. There are thousands of niches that you can cover. And just about any of these can be profitable.

Write down ten things that you think you might be interested in. These can be things that you have expereince in like hobbies. Or something that you have experience in that has been your carreer. Or something that you are promoting , like your online business. It can be almost anyrthing.

Now if your experience has been limited or you want to branch out, then you must be willing to take the time to learn as much as you can about your niche.

Take the 5 that you are really interested in and type in "blogs about...." into your browser. Look at the top 10 blogs on your subject. Look at their google rank, look at what they are doing and make notes on what was good about their blog. Look carefully at their resources and make notes on references and links.

Now narrow it down to 2 that you would like to do. Write down what the purpose of your blog is. Decide when and how you will blog. Remember that the best blogs are comnsist and fresh daily or weekly. So you will need to build time into your schedule to get it all done.

The basics of blogging are simple. You are offering information, ideas, views, stories to your subscribers. You become an expert in your topic, Or you let others participate in a conversation or offer thier views or experiences. And many people do this just for their own pleasure. Others use their blogging to make profit and that is what we are here to discuss. As you are offering information and ideas, you also offer solutions to a situation in the form of goods or services. They can be your own products or sevices or they can be affiliate programs. We'll talk more about that as time goes on.

The blog publishers may add ads of their own to your blog page. Most publishers try to refer the ads to your topic. Some will share a portion of those product revenue with you. Many will allow you to take their ads off if you pay for their professional packages. That is how they make their money and offer the blog service to you free.

You can start as a free member and move into a professional package when you become profitable. But, first things first.
